DEPARTMENT OF DRAVYAGUN VIDNYAN

INTRODUCTION

The subject Dravyaguna Vidnyan deals with basic principles of Ayurvedic & Modern Pharmacology and detailed study of herbal drugs from identification & cultivation to utilize for treatment thus creating platform for therapeutic application of herbs. This subject is backbone of clinical practice. The subject also includes standardization of Medicinal plants. Amongst all the available sources of drugs in various therapies herbal drugs are proved to be safest; so more and more people are attracted and wish to undergo only herbal therapy. These Herbal Medicines are gaining more & more importance not only in India but also abroad. The subject also covers Pharmacovigilance aspect of modern & Ayurveda Drugs. The subject has great potential in industries as Dravyagun experts are required in different fields like in Pharmacies and Pharmaceutical companies, Research Institutes. Post graduation in Dravyaguna subject offers wide range of job opportunities.

OBJECTIVES

    • The department aims to train Doctors to make Rational use of Ayurvedic single herbs and preparation in various ailments. This requires thorough knowledge of medicinal plant in identification understanding good quality material. Working knowledge of Pharmacognosy is also given thus Dravyaguna experts can accomplish important task of maintaining quality of raw material in pharmacies & as well as in individual practice. Along with detail properties and uses in various diseases, the right doses, time of administration and vehicle of medicines are thoroughly taught which are very important in treating diseases by Ayurvedic principles and medicines.
    • Students are made aware about propagation & cultivation techniques of important Medicinal plants. Students are encouraged to study drugs with promising results from herbal traditions practiced in remote areas with the help of Ethno botany.

 

DEPARTMENTAL FEATURES

Medicinal plant Nursery, wormiculture project Garden Bio waste management plant & water recycle project are salient features of this department. Wormiculture project yield 600 to 800 kg. of good manure from garden and pharmacy waste. Few others to mention below are:
    • Sufficient number of plants medicinal plants in herbal garden.
    • Sufficient number of medicinal plant.
    • Wet preserved specimens of various parts of plants.
    • Dry preserved specimens of various parts of plants.
    • Permanent slides are available.
    • Photos of medicinal plants with rare species.
    • Study material in soft copies.
    • Well established Pharmacognosy lab with all necessary instruments & equipments.
    • Separate U.G & P.G Library containing various Samhitas, Nighantus texts and reference books of Ayurveda, Modern science.

 

ACTIVITIES OF DEPARTMENT

    • Department has successfully organized Reorientation Training Programme for the teachers in Dravyaguna Vidnyan subject in 2009.
    • Department has organized various exhibitions as joint ventures with Botanical departments in Pune University, Agriculture University and Pharmacy Institutes. Continuous interactions with Social Forestry and other departments have enhanced departmental developments.
    • Department teachers have been invited as a guest speaker to deliver lectures in RoTPs, ToT, international conferences, other institutes etc. Department teachers & students have presented papers/ posters in different seminars.
    • Teachers of the department participate in various RoTP, seminars, CME, etc. for up gradation of knowledge.

 

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

    • Various exhibitions as joint ventures with botanical depts. in University, Agriculture University and Pharmacy Institutes.
    • Continuous interactions with social forestry and other departments have enhanced departmental developments. Various strata of community are educated, boosted for use of medicinal plant in primary health care.
    • Medicinal plant Nursery, wormiculture project are salient features. Wormiculture project yield 600 to 800 kg. good manure from garden and pharmacy waste.
    • Department has distributed Guduchi saplings during swine flu epidemics in Pune in 2010. 5] Adjuvant therapy of fresh herbal drug like Vasa, Guduchi and Tulasi are used in patients of tuberculosis along with DOTS. Shatavari, Ashwagandha & other Rasayan drugs are used to boost immune system & to minimize adverse effects of DOTS.
